About Multicultural and Diversity
Multicultural and diversity education focuses on ideals of social justice and education equity. It is dedicated to
facilitating educational experiences in which all students reach their full potential as learners and as socially and
critically active and aware citizens. Multicultural and diversity training acknowledges that schools are essential to
laying the foundations for the transformation of society through educational equity.
The multicultural and diversity training focuses on:
- Creating Awareness through Responsive Education
- A Framework for Understanding Poverty
- Valuing Diversity and Sexual Harassment
- No Excuses! How to Increase Minority Achievement
Goals
The underlying goal of multicultural and diversity education is to positively impact social change. The pathway toward this goal incorporates three strands of transformation:
- Transformation of self
- Transformation of schools and schooling
- Transformation of society
For the Participants
Participants in multicultural and diversity training will:
- Learn how to deal with these issues in the workplace
- Learn to respect all employees in the workplace
- Develop awareness of all cultures
- Learn to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace
- Understand how one’s own belief system affects student academic achievement
- Identify obstacles that keep students from learning and succeeding in school
- Define equity and explain the relationship between equity and high student achievement
- Understand equity as a foundational principle of a school that succeeds with all students
- Understand and respond appropriately to cultural differences
- Model acceptance and respect for all people
- Acknowledge all people as important human beings
- Work toward reducing racism, sexism, and classism in the schools and classrooms
- Explain how economic realities affect patterns of living, therefore affecting student performance
- Identify discipline interventions that are effective
- Give examples of the hidden rules
- Explain language registers, discourse patterns, and story structures
- Explain mediation and cognitive structures
