MENTOR PROGRAMS
About New Teacher Mentor Program
In 2006, the Clay County Public School System partnered with the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership
to design and implement a teacher retention program targeting beginning teachers. In 2005 the new teacher
retention rate was 72%. Following the 2006-07 inaugural mentor program, the retention rate increased to
90%. In 2007-08 the retention rate was 91%.
The Schultz Center directs this program and provides training meetings for the mentors during the school year.
The average mentor works with 10 teachers. The mentors are trained by the Schultz Center to address the
following areas:
- Train teachers
with classroom management and attendance
- Assist with lesson plans,
school, and district policies
- Model effective communication with parents,
administrators, and other teachers
- Assist with grading, assessment,
and evaluation
- Identify campus support for
classroom teachers and students
- Assist teachers with becoming
familiar with personnel at the school and district level
- Help teachers understand
important test dates and special events
- Encourage teachers to locate
and use instructional support material
About Principal Mentor Program
This program was initiated in 2008 to address the
Florida Differentiated Accountability Model and support new principals. Three retired Clay County administrators participated
in the National Leadership Immersion Institute to prepare to serve as mentors for this program. These mentors serve
as "outside experts." They focus on helping principals with improving teaching and learning by creating
professional learning communities, building collaborative school cultures, analyzing and using multiple assessment
data to make informed decisions regarding school improvement plans, developing conflict resolution and problem
solving strategies, and understanding and utilizing current research and practices.
