PRINCIPAL ACADEMY
About the Principal Academy
The Principal Academy began in fall 2007 and is one of several developed offerings in the Schultz Center Leadership Institute. It provides current principals with the opportunity to join other colleagues and review and process current research/best practices around the Florida Leadership Standards. The Academy is held at the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership and meets twelve days a year over a span of three years.
The Principal Academy builds on the foundation of the Schultz Center Leadership Institute themes:
- Establishing and living a clear vision and purpose
- Leading and managing innovation and improvement
- Developing capacity for high-performing teams and collaborative relationships
- Acquiring and implementing deep knowledge of teaching and learning
- Creating organizational accountability systems that sustain results-driven performance
There are three phases to the Principal Academy:
- Year 1: The work of year one focuses on the knowledge, skills, and research-based practices embedded in the Florida Principal Leadership Standards and the five Schultz Center Leadership themes: Introducing, reviewing, and understanding the Schultz Center Lead 360°.
-
Year 2: Upon successful completion of year one, year two builds on the application and integration of the knowledge, skills, and research presented in year one, and requires clear demonstration of the implementation of the new learning at the school site.
-
Year 3: Upon successful completion of year two, year three builds on the previous two years and requires the administrator to move the work to scale which addresses the dimensions of depth, sustainability, distributed leadership, and actual shift in reform ownership and begin mentoring others in the process. The culminating evaluation at the end of year three is a site visit by an external team to document reform efforts and increased student achievement.
Special Features
There are unique, required sessions supporting each year of the Principal Academy:
- Session delivery includes presentations, guest speakers, case studies, collaboration, action research, and reflection.
- The content of each session aligns with Florida Principal Standards, the five Schultz themes, and with current, relevant research to build capacity for high performing leaders in public schools.
- Through dialogue with other cohort participants and personal reflection, the principal participant determines how the content applies to their individual site.
Principal Academy Goals
The administrator will acquire in-depth knowledge of content in the areas of school leadership and the Florida Leadership Standards for the purpose of leading continuous school improvement and increasing student achievement.
