K-12 SCIENCE PROGRAM
About the K-12 Science Program
Science professional development was created to support the Sunshine State Standards for Science and National Staff Development Council principles and standards. The science courses were developed to broaden and expand teachers’ knowledge of content and best teaching practices in science. District initiatives such as Understanding by Design and the 5 E’s instructional model are supported by science professional development. The 5 E's includes engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate and was developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study.

Science courses are designed for teachers of science, school instructional coaches, and administrators and consist of:

  • Grades K-2 Science Inquiry
  • Grades 3-5 Science Inquiry
  • “Just In Time” Turnaround Science 3-5
  • Grade 2 Life Cycle of Butterflies
  • Academy of Science
  • Middle School Science 101
  • Earth Science for Turnaround Middle Schools
  • FCAT Annually Assessed Benchmark Investigations for Middle School
  • High School Physics
  • High School Chemistry

Goals for the Participants
K-12 Science participants will:
  • Build lessons around science inquiry
  • Observe and develop 5 E’s instructional model lessons.
  • Understand how to implement a 5 E’s lesson in a classroom setting
  • Increase science content knowledge to build rigor in science classrooms K-12
  • Experience hands-on investigations that model best practices
For the Participants
Participants of Mathematics professional development will:
  • Build lessons around science inquiry
  • Observe and develop 5 E’s instructional model lessons
  • Understand how to implement a 5 E’s lesson in a classroom setting
  • Increase science content knowledge to build rigor in science classrooms K-12
  • Experience hands-on investigations that model best practices
  • Transfer training effectively to the classroom
  • Develop an understanding of differentiated science instruction
  • Learn how to incorporate writing in science
  • Collaborate with peers to improve student instruction
